Sponsored Agents

Sponsored Agents are post-click conversational agents that an advertiser runs inside ChatGPT after a user clicks a sponsored placement, launched by OpenAI on September 16, 2026 and piloted with select US advertisers including HubSpot and Shopify integrations.

Definition

Sponsored Agents are post-click conversational agents an advertiser runs inside ChatGPT once a user has clicked into a sponsored placement. OpenAI launched the format on September 16, 2026, piloted with select US advertisers including HubSpot and Shopify integrations.

The launch was reported by Search Engine Roundtable, with HubSpot and Shopify named as pilot participants by Quartz. Beyond those two facts, OpenAI has disclosed almost nothing: pricing, targeting, measurement and a broader rollout timeline are all unpublished four days after launch.

Why It Matters

Sponsored Agents change what "post-click" means for a buyer. A landing page is fully instrumented by the advertiser; a conversation running inside ChatGPT is not. That shifts part of the post-click relationship onto a surface the advertiser doesn't fully control or measure.

The format also breaks the sampling method every existing ChatGPT ad tracker relies on. Trackers built to screenshot a static Sponsored block have no fixed object to capture in an ongoing, personalized conversation, which is why no aftermarket tracker claims coverage of Sponsored Agents as of this writing.

Examples

  • •HubSpot and Shopify are the two integrations OpenAI named in the September 16, 2026 pilot; no other advertiser participants have been disclosed.

Common Mistakes

  • ✕Treating Sponsored Agents as a bigger version of ChatGPT's Sponsored block. The Sponsored block is a static, labeled placement below an answer; Sponsored Agents are a separate post-click surface that opens a conversation after the click instead of ending at it.
