See all ads on AdLibrary →Founded in Cape Town around 2015 by Sean Kristafor, Black Insomnia built a global DTC and Amazon brand on the 'world's strongest coffee' claim, with caffeine content verified at ~702mg per 12oz. The brand grew virally through social media and performance marketing before becoming a serious Amazon competitor to Death Wish Coffee. Also searched as Black.
Black Insomnia's ad strategy is built on a single extreme claim: world's strongest coffee. This creates instant curiosity and shareability. Facebook and Reddit campaigns drove initial viral growth, while Amazon performance ads sustain sales at scale. Browse Black Insomnia Coffee ads on AdLibrary.
Facebook drove the original viral growth through meme-style strength and humor creative targeting coffee enthusiasts and gym-culture audiences. Instagram reaches the same demographic with product lifestyle shots and caffeine-culture humor. Amazon DSP retargeting recaptures intent-stage shoppers.
Copy is unapologetically extreme — warning labels, caffeine numbers front and center, 'not for the faint of heart' framing. Dark humor and edgy creative voice appeal to the brand's core audience of high-tolerance caffeine consumers and extreme sports enthusiasts.
Black Insomnia is a textbook case of how a single extreme product claim, engineered for virality, can build a global DTC brand from zero marketing budget. Their growth was earned media first, paid media second — a model that works only when the core claim is genuinely remarkable.
